Havana, February 9 (RHC) -- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Sunday mourned the death of Sam Nujoma, Founding Father and first president of Namibia, who led his people in the fight for independence and against the racist system of apartheid.
On his X account, the president expressed his condolences for the event “to the brother Namibian people, family and friends.”
For his part, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez stated on that social network that “one of the great African leaders, a close friend” of the Caribbean island, (who) led his people in the fight against apartheid and for independence, has passed away.”
Likewise, other Cuban leaders echoed the death of the veteran leader at the age of 95, including the president of the National Assembly of People's Power (parliament), Esteban Lazo, who described him as "a worthy son of Africa and an extraordinary friend of Cuba.
Sam Nujoma was president of the country between 1990 and 2005, founder in 1960 of the South East Africa People's Organization (Swapo), and of the national liberation movement that achieved its independence from the racist South African regime in 1990.
