Havana, February 9 (RHC) -- With deep regret, our people have learned of the death of the dear friend of Cuba, His Excellency Dr. Sam Nujoma, Founding Father and first President of the sister Republic of Namibia.

Throughout his life he demonstrated a special affection for Cuba and support for the Cuban Revolution, from the time he led the heroic Namibian people in the struggle for independence and later, when he assumed the highest leadership of his nascent independent State and also as an African leader, a symbol of firmness and defense of just causes.

He was a fervent promoter of solidarity and cooperation with Cuba and never ceased to recognize and appreciate the Cuban contribution to the struggles for the liberation of Africa and the end of apartheid.

The Cuban people and Government will always be grateful for your support in the fight against the blockade. In 1991, he was awarded the Order of José Martí, the highest distinction awarded by the Cuban State.

The Cuban Communist Party, Government and people extend their most heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of the sister Republic of Namibia, and to family and friends.”

For this reason, Official Mourning is declared from 6:00 a.m. on February 10th until 12:00 midnight on February 11, 2025, and National Mourning on February 12, 2025, from 6:00 a.m. until 12 midnight

During the validity of both the Official and National mourning periods, the Cuban flag will be flown at half-mast in public buildings and military institutions.

Likewise, while National Mourning is in effect, public shows and festive activities are suspended.
