Havana, February 12 (RHC)-- Cuban singer-songwriter Eduardo Sosa has died as a result of complications from a hemorrhagic stroke, the Cuban Institute of Music announced in a statement.

His death occurred early Wednesday morning, at the age of 52, at the Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital, in the eastern city of Guantánamo, according to the official note released by the institution.

The prominent troubadour, originally from the Santiago municipality of Mayarí, joined the amateur artists movement at the age of 12 and won numerous awards, especially during his time with the University Student Federation, at the Frank País García Higher Pedagogical Institute in Santiago de Cuba, where he graduated with a degree in Music Education.

Eduardo Sosa began his professional career in 1997 with the duo Postrova, which immediately attracted the attention of critics and the public for its originality and artistic quality.  He released two albums for Caribean Production and EMI Odeón Spain from that time and participated in the Cuban feature film Las profecías de Amanda, directed by Pastor Vega, the text highlights.

In 2003, Eduardo Sosa embarked on his solo career.  He recorded four more albums and, in 2017, won the Cubadisco Award in the Trova category with the production "Como si eran mías," on the Colibrí record label.

He became known throughout the country for hits of his own authorship such as: "Mañanitas de montaña," "Retoño del monteo," "El son de Contramaestre" and "A mí me gusta, compay," among others; as well as for his musicalization of José Martí's simple verses and his fabulous versions of emblematic themes of Cuban song, among which stands out "La Bayamesa", by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, José Fornaris and Francisco Castillo.

In parallel with his prolific work as a composer and performer, he developed an arduous task as a cultural manager, presiding for more than 10 years the Organizing Committee of the Pepe Sánchez Trova Festival in Santiago de Cuba, in whose organization he worked at the time of contracting the disease.

During his successful career, Eduardo Sosa represented Cuba in multiple international events, of a cultural and political nature, in which he shone for his artistic quality and demonstrated his commitment to the Revolution and his solidarity with the noblest causes of other peoples.

Throughout his artistic career, he received multiple recognitions, such as: the Distinction for National Culture, the Raúl Gómez García, Abel Santamaría and Alejo Carpentier medals and the replica of Generalísimo Máximo Gómez's machete.

In 2023, he was elected deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power in its Tenth Legislature, for the municipality of 10 de Octubre; and at the recently held tenth congress of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, he was elected vice president of this organization.

By family decision, his body will be cremated and a posthumous tribute will be paid to him at the cinema of his native Mayarí, and, later, at the Casa de la Trova in Santiago de Cuba.  His ashes will be deposited in the Santa Ifigenia cemetery.
