Cuba and Russia expand scientific-medical collaboration

Havana, Feb 19 (RHC) The heads of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cuba and the National Center for Medical Research of Endocrinology in Russia signed an agreement on Tuesday in Moscow, aimed at strengthening scientific and medical collaboration.

The head of the Russian institution, Natalia Mokrysheva, characterized the event as a milestone in enhancing the collaboration between Russia and Cuba in the field of endocrinology.

In this regard, she expressed confidence that the agreement will pave the way for new prospects in scientific collaboration, facilitating the sharing of expertise and clinical training, and fostering friendly and professional connections in the realm of medicine and healthcare.

In turn, the deputy director general of the CIGB, Jorge Valdés, emphasized that the project will enhance the advancement of molecular genetic research for the treatment of hereditary, genetic, and endocrine disorders.

According to Valdés, the agreement is the result of ten years of collaborative efforts, which involved the exchange of various Cuban-developed therapies, such as the treatment for diabetic foot ulcers using the medication Heberprot-P.

From 2017 to 2019, the Department of Diabetic Foot at the National Medical Research Center of Endocrinology in Russia conducted clinical trials with Heberprot-P, which proved its remarkable efficacy in the management of chronic wounds on the lower limbs in individuals with diabetes.

The studies showed that the medication developed by the CIGB experts substantially shortens the duration of wound healing, hospital stays, and the period of disability for this group of patients.

Based on the outcomes, this approach has been incorporated into the clinical protocols for managing diabetic foot ulcers in the Russian healthcare system.  (Source: Prensa Latina)
