Havana, April 3 (RHC)-- The Cuba-Malaysia Friendship Association (FOCA) today expressed its profound admiration and gratitude for the extraordinary humanitarian work carried out by Cuban medical cooperation worldwide.
FOCA described the performance of Cuban health workers, present during major global health crises and in addressing the consequences of natural disasters, as an example of internationalism and solidarity. In a letter sent to the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (OCAP), the organization recalled the heroic efforts deployed by Cuban medical personnel during the Ebola epidemic in Africa, cholera in Haiti, and in the fight against dengue fever and COVID-19, which has earned them well-deserved global respect.
FOCA's message also highlights the important work carried out by the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), which in the 24 years since its founding has graduated more than 30,800 physicians from 122 universities, most of them underdeveloped.
The Cuban medical missions, it reiterates, "exemplify the spirit of solidarity, and their work, often carried out under the most difficult conditions, inspires profound admiration."
According to reports, a similar message was also sent to ICAP by the Philippine-Cuban Friendship Society, expressing gratitude to the Cuban government "for its unwavering commitment, especially in the field of medicine."
"Its global contribution has saved the lives of thousands of people through the Medical Cooperation Program, whose objective is to provide medical assistance to the countries most in need, based on the principles of solidarity, mutual support, and respect for national sovereignty," it emphasizes.
The letter was signed by the president of the aforementioned organization, Robert Corpuz, a 2009 graduate of ELAM, an institution in which "the soul and commitment of the Cuban government and people to human well-being resides."
Sharing his personal experience, Corpuz affirms that he has witnessed how Cubans enjoy fundamental rights and freedoms and also how, despite the difficulties generated by the US blockade, the people and government never wavered in their commitment to foreign students.
"They shared with us what was possible for them, but also through us, they shared with the world all the achievements in the field of medicine and human health," the message emphasizes.
