Havana, April 7 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel traveled today to the eastern territory where the Second "Frank País" Eastern Front, commanded by Raúl Castro, operated to pay tribute to revolutionary leader Vilma Espín (1930-2007), on the occasion of her 95th birthday.

The Cuban president announced on his social media profile, "Today we wake up at the Second "Frank País" Eastern Front to pay tribute to the heroine of the underground and the Rebel Army, to the leader of the Revolution in the Revolution led by Cuban women since 1959."

Vilma was a member of the Eastern University Student Federation (FEUO) and participated in the university's demonstrations in the streets of Santiago.

Later, she fought in the clandestine struggle, under the nom de guerre of Deborah, under the command of Frank País, particularly during the uprising of November 30, 1956, in Santiago de Cuba.

She joined the Rebel Army in the Sierra Maestra when her life was in extreme danger during the urban uprising, until the revolutionary triumph of January 1, 1959.

She founded and chaired the Federation of Cuban Women from 1960, where she played a leading role in defending women's rights and promoting their full emancipation.
