More than 135,000 Guatemalans Benefit from Operation Miracle

Guatemala City, December 6 (RHC-PL) –- From February 2008 up to November 2014, a total of 135,667 Guatemalan citizens had recovered or improved their eyesight thanks to 'Operation Miracle.'

'Operation Miracle' is an eye-surgery program run jointly by Cuba and Venezuela in the framework of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), an integration mechanism that is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Since the program was first implemented in 2005, more than three million patients have benefitted in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa.

Last month's opening of an new eye clinic in Guatemala brings to four the total number of eye-care specialized centers in the Central American country, whose mission is to assist low-income patients at no cost whatsoever.

A total of 468 Cuban ophthalmologists, distributed in 23 medical brigades, are currently working in 16 of Guatemala's 22 departments.
