Havana, January 28 (RHC)-- Cuban university students staged a torch march on the evening of January 27th along major Havana streets to mark the 162nd anniversary of the birth of National Independence Hero Jose Marti and to recall that 70 years ago Cuban Revolution Leader entered the historic University of Havana.

The march, which is carried out every January 27th, recalls the first university student march in 1953 to mark the 100th birthday of Jose Marti, and thus signal the way for the independence struggle in actions that would take place later like the assault on the Moncada Barracks in July 1953.

The Young Communist League took the opportunity to declare Fidel Castro, President Raul Castro and Second Communist Party Secretary Jose Ramon Machado Ventura delegates of honor to the upcoming 10th Congress of that organization.

University Student Federation President Yovani Montano addressed participants before the march kicked off to say that young people would march with joy for the victory. He stressed their commitment with the message recently sent to them by Fidel Castro.

Taking part in leading the marchers were: Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, Second Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party; First Vice President Miguel Diaz Canel, and members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, as well as members of the Cuban Five -- Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González.
