Havana University Awards US Nobel Prize Laureate

Havana, Feb 17, (RHC), – Nobel Chemistry Prize laureate Peter Agre, from the U.S.A., was granted the honor plaque for the 280 anniversary of the University of Havana.

The University Council granted Agre the award on the proposal of the Chemistry Faculty for his outstanding work.

The US scholar heads the Johns Hopkins Institute for Research on Malaria and he is also member of the US academies of National Sciences and American Arts and Science.

Doctor Agre told Prensa Latina news agency about his optimism about bilateral relations between Cuba and the United States by saying that Americans have much to learn from Cuba and also much to teach the Cubans, so together both people can do it much better.

The US scholar has visited Cuba in several occasions; in 2011 he visited the University´s Chemistry Faculty and in 2012 he was president of honor at a congress of biotechnology, held in Havana. He also met with Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro.
