Luanda, March 3 (RHC) -— Cuba has considerably contributed to boost literacy in Angola with its program known as “Yes, I Can,” said Adult Education Director Makulo Valentim.
In statements to Angopress news agency, the official explained that nearly 983,000 citizens learned how to read and write in 2014 and that since 2012, the figure has reached nearly two and a half million thanks to the Cuban literacy program.
In 1975, the Year of National Independence, only 15 percent of Angolans knew how to read and write, said the official. He added that the Angolan government has made important investments in education both in terms of infrastructure and by hiring thousands of teachers.
The Cuban “Yes, I Can” literacy program, which is being implemented in over 30 countries, has enjoyed great success. It is applied between seven weeks and three months and is based on a basic manual and video and radio materials.
