Havana, Apr 3, (RHC), – Theodor Friedrich, representative in Cuba of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), stressed Cuba's efforts to boost agricultural production without degrading soils.

The specialist was invited by the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University of Las Tunas to give a lecture on advanced techniques for soil conservation. The event follows the declaration of 2015 as International Year of Soils.

In statements to reporters, Friedrich highlighted the fact that Cuba is increasingly promoting and introducing the concept of conservation agriculture in its production development policies.

He added that the FAO appreciated the interest of governmental institutions in a sustainable production process, as well as their support of research centers and universities.

Born in the 1970s, conservation agriculture has among its objectives the diversification of crops and the elimination of soil tilling.
