Havana, May 1 (RHC) –- Hundreds of thousands of Cubans marched through the country’s main plazas and streets to celebrate International Workers Day, marked every May 1st.

In Havana, nearly one million Cubans rallied at the city's iconic Revolution Square. The massive parade was presided over by Cuban President Raul Castro. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also attended the celebrations in the Cuban capital.

The May Day parade started today at 7 o’clock, headed by the members of the Cuban Five. These men were reunited with their families in December, after the United States and Cuba agreed to restore diplomatic ties, leading to their release from jail following some 16 years of unjust imprisonment.

The Five were followed by a bloc of health professionals, among them those who fought the Ebola pandemic in Africa and return to Cuba victorious after saving countless lives.

Ulises Guilarte de Nascimiento, Secretary General of the Cuban Workers Confederation, delivered the opening remarks in Havana, calling on Cuban workers to march for a more prosperous Cuba and unite to keep building a fair socialist society.

Today, more than 1,800 representatives from 192 unions or social organizations from 68 countries also took part in Cuba's International Workers' Day celebrations.

An excited crowd of young people closed the parade in Havana this morning.
