Havana, May 22 (RHC) -– Cuba needs to implement a national policy to enhance its logistic and supply systems as crucial factor for economic development, said an expert in Havana.
During an international forum on trade development, the vice-rector of the Havana-based Jose Antonio Echeverria Higher Polytechnic Institute, Jose Antonio Acevedo that excessive stocking of products and their low availability on store shelves, plus consumer dissatisfaction are the consequence of neglected logistics.
Professor Acevedo told reporters the country´s logistic strategy will require the coordination of all economic actors, from primary sources down to distribution and according to the final demand.
The expert admitted that Cuba has low logistic performance, a factor that becomes a bottle neck in the productive base affecting consumers and in order to change the situation, the people involved in the sector must be well trained and the efficient use of new technologies must be enhanced.
The creation of distribution chains based on an integrated logistical management will contribute to the country´s strategy towards a sustainable and prosperous development.
At present, the ministries of trade and foreign investment, transport and others are now involved in actions to improve activities related to storage, distribution, and container management.
Cuba currently has 10,000 warehouses, but only 47 percent carry out product distribution, which points to the long way to go to improve the performance of these entities.
