Geneva, October 21 (RHC)-- Cuba declared in favor of policies to address the causes and consequences of the current immigration crisis in a central intervention during the 133rd Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which concluded in Geneva today.

"Otherwise, one can predict it will not be possible to achieve the objectives of sustainable development," said Yolanda Ferrer, who heads the Cuban delegation to the event.

The intensity and generality of what is happening is unprecedented in humanity while racism and xenophobia are increasing, and particularly aimed at migrants who come from different cultures and regions of the world where violence abounds, she said.

Ferrer said the vulnerability of these people is accentuated because the states that have ratified the main international legal instruments demonstrate lack of political will to implement its provisions.

The Cuban representative pointed out that some governments allow entry of migrants to their country, but do not invest or promote the process of integration that is needed for these human beings to develop their full potential and make a positive contribution to the society in which they live.

She stressed that finding a lasting solution to the phenomenon takes cooperation among states at the bilateral, regional and international level, to recognize the shared responsibility of all nations in dealing with a problem of global concern.

This is an issue that cannot withstand more speeches and slogans, but decisions to ensure respect for the integrity, dignity and well-being of human beings.

Ferrer, who is also the president of the International Relations Commission of the Cuban Parliament, said the walls and barriers that are built can hinder migration, but do not solve the reasons why more than one hundred million people are affected by migratory phenomena.

About half of all international migrants live in only 10 countries, but the largest number resides in the United States where they suffer all kinds of discrimination. The Cuban delegation to the IPU is also made up of deputies Luis Morlote, Alberto Nunez and Lazaro Barredo.
