Havana, May 28 (RHC-PL) -- Air Berlin, the second largest German airline, has begun operations to Havana with two new weekly flights between Dusseldorf and Havana, the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) said. The new service started up this morning.

It will offer "excellent opportunities to continue strengthening ties between the Caribbean country and the German nation," the agency said.

The operation confirms Germany's preference for Cuba as a travel destination, the company said in a press release. According to Mintur, Air Berlin will operate twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The new operation will bring to Cuba more than 1,400 weekly visitors and those from the European nation will increase to more than 4,700, including flights with Condor, Air Berlin and Eurowings, the report stated.

According to Mintur, Germany is among the three main sources of tourists to Cuba. The number of German tourists in 2015 reached 175,264, for a 26-percent growth compared to 2014, said the source.
