A New Chapter in Mexico's History

by María Josefina Arce

A new chapter in the history of Mexico has begun. For the first time, a woman will hold the presidency of the country.  Claudia Sheinbaum, who won last June's general elections with nearly 60% of the vote, will govern for the next six years.

Sheinbaum, of the Sigamos Haciendo Historia (Let's Make History) coalition, was a resounding winner, becoming the most popular candidate in recent Mexican history by a wide margin over her rivals.

Sheinbaum has promised to govern for each and every citizen, and has expressed her intention to continue what her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has called the Fourth Transformation, with a strong social policy.

The programs implemented in the last six years have focused on vulnerable sectors, and the results are tangible, benefiting the most humble.

In fact, the former head of government of Mexico City, who will assume the presidency on October 1, will find a country where poverty has decreased in recent years.

More than nine million Mexicans have been able to escape this condition, thanks to a sustained increase in salaries and the development of initiatives that reach the most remote communities of the territory.

In the field of education, the efforts made have materialized in the allocation of resources to improve the infrastructure of schools, scholarships for more than 12 million students and the provision of free study materials for children and adolescents.

Sheinbaum, who has emphasized that during her term she will work to transform the nation into an educational, humanistic and scientific power, has declared that she will maintain these projects and develop new ones to continue fighting inequalities.Of course, Mexico's first woman president will face challenges such as continuing to make progress in a better health system for all, insecurity and the challenges posed by climate change.

In fact, she has announced that her first working trip after taking office will be to the state of Guerrero, which was hit by Hurricane John in recent days, to assess the needs of the victims.

Sheinbaum has made clear her commitment to continue working for the welfare of citizens and to continue the transformation of Mexico into a more just and equitable nation.
