Another victory for Cuba at the UN

By María Josefina Arce

It was another historic day at the UN headquarters in New York. Once again, the world has overwhelmingly condemned the genocidal blockade that the United States has maintained against the Cuban people for more than six decades, in clear violation of international law.

One hundred and eighty-seven countries voted in favor of the draft resolution presented by Cuba on the need to put an end to this hostile policy, which has caused the Caribbean nation more than five billion dollars in damages between March 2023 and February 2024.

The isolation of the United States was once again evident, supported as usual only by its unconditional ally, Israel, while Moldova abstained.

This is the thirty-second time since 1992 that the UN General Assembly has expressed its rejection of the economic siege, which was intensified under the administration of now former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) with more than 240 measures, and maintained under the presidency of Joe Biden.

From March 2023 to February 2024, Cuba has denounced that the US actions were aimed at identifying and persecuting the main sources of income of the Cuban economy.

The interventions by representatives of various countries and regional organizations once again showed that the world rejects Washington's blockade of Cuba, the longest and most comprehensive system of unilateral coercive measures ever imposed on a nation.

CARICOM, the Caribbean Community, reaffirmed that there is no legitimate justification for the coercive measures against the largest of the Antilles, while CELAC, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, pointed out that the application of sanctions that are not supported by international law, nor by the letter, spirit or purposes and principles of the UN Charter, is incongruous.

The vote was preceded by numerous demonstrations of solidarity with Cuba in recent months in various countries around the world and in many cities in the United States.

The resounding victory at the UN is a sign of immense solidarity with the Cuban people, who, as many affirm, have the right to live without a blockade and to travel in peace along their chosen path.

This was stressed by the Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who said in his X report that the dignity of this people and universal solidarity had once again defeated the United States.
