Letter Writing Campaign to the United Nations opposing U.S. Sanctions on Venezuela
Dear friends,
We urgently need to raise our voices to prevent more innocent people from dying in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Yet again it its imperial history, the United States has applied a financial blockade to prevent the purchase of food and medicine, a lethal weapon with the objective of making an entire people succumb to hunger and disease; a people whose only crime is a desire for sovereignty and independence.
President Maduro was elected on May 20, 2018, with an overwhelming majority of votes, in clean, free and transparent elections, with the presence of international observers, and with opposition candidates.
By what right does the U.S. decide who will be the future president of a sovereign country? By what right does it designate an individual as President, flouting all international laws?
Recently a 6 year old boy died in Italy while waiting for a bone marrow transplant and special medicines that are imported by the Venezuelan State. The child died because it is currently impossible for the Venezuelan State to have access to resources. This child could have been helped by the agreement signed between the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA and the Bone Marrow Transplant Association to undergo the necessary surgery and treatment abroad, but the financial embargo has blocked the transfer of the necessary funds to the Bone Marrow Transplant Association in Italy to ensure the continuity of the agreement and treatment for new patients. Another 25 patients who are waiting for transplants are at risk of the same fate.
Additionally, international banking institutions have repeatedly cancelled and revoked transfers from PDVSA and other institutions to pay for the treatment of leukemia patients.
This fact confirms Venezuela's denunciations and the warnings of UN human rights experts. The blockade constitutes a serious violation of human rights.
For this reason, the International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity makes a CALL for a Campaign to send letters to the Secretary General of the United Nations and to the Assistant to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to demand that the United States immediately end the economic sanctions and the blockade against the Venezuelan people.
