Cubans are celebrating the 58th anniversary of the monumental Christ of Havana, an emblematic sculpture of the Cuban capital.

Open on December 25h, 1958, seven days before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, the Christ of Havana was made by renowned late Cuban sculptor Gilma Madera. It’s the sculpture of a Jesus standing and watching the Bay with one hand on his chest and the other one blessing the harbor. The 20-meter-high sculpture is made up of 67 Carrara marble pieces, weighs 320 tons and is located in the town of Casablanca, a former fishermen’s village. The Christ was made in Rome and blessed by the Pope. During installation, Madera was helped by a team of 20 marble experts. The site is a sacred Cuban site that provides a wonderful and special view of old and modern Havana.
