Cuban film dedicated to patriot Ignacio Agramonte premieres on March 24th

The movie El Mayor, the latest production of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) is ready for its premiere in national cinemas later this moth.

Benigno Iglesias, vice president of programming at ICAIC, told the press that the premiere of the long-awaited feature film, which pays tribute to the Cuban patriot Ignacio Agramonte, will be on the 24th, coinciding with the official delivery of the 2020 National Film Award on the 61st anniversary of the foundation of ICAIC –the Cuban Film Institute.

Ignacio Agramonte was born in Camagüey, in 1841 and died in the Battle of Jimaguayú, in 1873. He was president of the Committee of Camagüey and drafted the first constitution of the Republic of Cuba. Ignacio Agramonte belonged to one of Camagüey's most prestigious families, as did his wife Amalia Simoni Argilagos.

According to ICAIC’s vice president of programming at ICAIC, the tour of the film through the movie theaters across the country will begin on March 25, with special actions in the province of Camagüey, the hometown of Agramonte and where the film shooting took place.

Rigoberto López, whose work is widely recognized in documentary and fiction creation, and founder of the Traveling Caribbean Film Show, devoted the last days of his life to the conclusion of El Mayor. After his death, experienced Angel Alderete, took over as the film director.
