The European Heritage Label has been awarded to ten new sites that have played a significant role in the history and culture of Europe or the building of the European Union. The awards were announced on March 31st, 2020.

The new sites awarded in 2020 are: Archaeological Area of Ostia Antica in Italy; Underwater Cultural Heritage of the Azores in Portugal; Colonies of Benevolence in Belgium, the Netherlands; Living Heritage of Szentendre in Hungary; the Place of diplomatic meetings in Czech Republic; Site of Remembrance in Łambinowice, Poland; the Message of the European Spring of Nations in Slovenia; Werkbund Estates in Europe, Chambon-sur-Lignon Memorial in France and The Three Brothers in Latvia.

About the awarded sites, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, said:

“They all provide great opportunities for European citizens to connect with their cultural heritage and strengthen their sense of belonging to the European Union.”

The European Heritage Label is a recognition awarded by the European Union to buildings, documents, museums, archives, monuments or events which are seen as milestones in the creation of today's Europe. These sites are said to celebrate and symbolize European ideals, values, history and integration.

The European Heritage Label aims to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the European Union’s shared and diverse heritage, especially amongst the younger generation. It also contributes to strengthening European citizens’ sense of belonging to the Union.

The ten new sites awarded in 2020 bring to 48 the total number of sites awarded the European Heritage Label across Europe.
