AMLO laments death of Cuban trova musician

Havana, December 20 (RHC)-- Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) lamented the death of renowned Cuban trova musician Vicente Feliú.

Vicente died Friday of a heart attack, during a concert at Havana’s Museo de la Música, at the age of 74.

Together with Silvio Rodríguez, Noel Nicola, Sara González, Lázaro García, Augusto Blanca and others, he founded Cuba’s Nueva Trova Movement in the early years of the Cuban Revolution, influencing several generations on the island and across Latin America.

Vicente is the older brother of fellow singer-songwriter Santiago Feliú, who died also of a heart attack in 2014 at the age of 51.

He recorded eight albums, notably Créeme (1978), Ansias del Alba (1985), Aurora (1995), Guevarianas (1997), Itinerario (1998) and Colibrí (2001).

“Political affiliation makes us aware of and committed to just causes, and so do also art, literature and music. That is why I am going to miss maestro, Vicente Feliú,” AMLO wrote on his official Twitter account.

The Mexican president accompanied his condolence message with a video featuring Vicente Feliú, singing one of his best known, most emblematic tunes ‘Créeme’, as a duet with Silvio Rodríguez.

Mexican media reported also on the death of the Cuban trova musician.

La Jornada newspaper recalled Vicente’s frequent visits to Mexico, where he performed, delighted his audience with his music, marked by strong social and political content.

Mexican radio, television, printed and digital publications alike described Vicente Feliú as a versatile, expressive musician, poet and guitarist.
