Havana, Dec 22 (RHC) The bibliographic and documentary exhibition Alicia Alonso in Our America was inaugurated this Thursday in the José Antonio Echeverría library of Casa de las Américas, to celebrate the 103rd anniversary of the Cuban prima ballerina assoluta’s birth.

In collaboration with the Museum of Dance, the exhibition at the Havana cultural institution displays documents, photographs, posters and programs that show the passage of the Prima Ballerina Assoluta through Latin America, from the continental tour of 1949 to those in which she served as director and choreographer in 2017. The exhibition also includes a selection of decorations and awards received by the artist.

The historian of the National Ballet of Cuba, Miguel Cabrera, recalled to those present the character of the majestic dancer and her influence on the development of Latin American ballet.

Along with several intellectuals, the director of the National Dance Museum, researcher Pedro Simón, also dedicated a few words to accompany the selection and curation of the exhibition.

Meanwhile, the vice president of Casa de las Américas, Jaime Gómez, recalled the friendship between Alicia Alonso and Haydee Santamaría, heroine and founder of the institution, to which Alonso belonged as a family since its foundation.

The inauguration of this cultural proposal coincided with the commemoration of the Ibero-American Dance Day, in addition to being in the context of the 80th anniversary of her debut in the character of Giselle. (Source: PL)
