Havana, March 12 (RHC)-- Cuba won the two crowns of the individual events in the 5th Yucatan Table Tennis Open, held in Mexico, which was attended by 150 players from 10 countries, including several well-ranked athletes.

In the men´s event, veteran Andy Pereira did not have too many complications to win,  specially after beating in semifinals American Sharon Alguetti, who had previously won the U22 contest.

But the highlight  of the event was Daniela Fonzeca, who earned the title in the U22 tournament and also became gold medalist among seniors after defeating 4-0 Chilean Judith Morales in the women's final.

Fonzeca´s toughest rival was the three-time Olympic contestant Cuban-born Mexican Yadira Silva, whom she beat in semifinals.

The Caribbean island also won two more scepters through Diomar Arguelles (men´s U15 event) and Pereira, who joined his victim in individuals to win the men´s doubles competition.

In addition, Fonzeca, along with her teammate Karla Perez finished second in the women´s doubles when falling 0-3 in the final to locals Silva and Clio Barcenas, while Livan Martinez was bronze medalist in the men´s U22 event.

The entire Cuban squad will remain on Mexican soil for the Yucatecan League, tournament that they will use to continue training ahead of their main goal of the tear: the Pan American Games of Lima, Peru, to take place next summer.

This was so far the only event for the Cuban women's team, while Pereira, along with Jorge Moises Campos, who didn´t attend this contest by being hired by a club in Germany, have possibilities to attend the world championship of Budapest, Hungary, from April 21-28 next.
