Lima, August 10 (RHC) – Cuban U-20 High Jump champion Luis Enrique Zayas achieved this Friday two career milestones, when he set a new Personal Best (2.30 m) and also became Pan-Am champion.
“It was a very tense competition; I was under a lot of pressure, but I always trusted my odds”, Zayas told Cuban press members who are covering the Lima 2019 Pan-Am Games.
Zayas, who had a Personal Best of 2.27 m, was among the competition´s underdogs, but according to him, his result was influenced by the presence of High Jump World Record Holder Javier Sotomayor, who gave Zayas tips and recommendations throughout the whole event.
“It was something amazing having him (Sotomayor) telling me from the bleachers what to do and what I was doing wrong. That made me feel quite good”. Zayas said.
The young Pan-Am champion, who just turned 22 last May, said his mind is set on the upcoming events: World Championship in Doha and Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
