Burial of Andres Ayon

Havana, October 26 (RHC/JIT)-- The body of Andres Ayon, Cuban sports glory and member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Mexico, was laid to rest on Monday in a ceremony attended by INDER Vice President Ariel Sainz Rodriguez.

The farewell to the former pitcher who shone in the professional circuit of the island with the Marianao and Almendares teams, won two titles in the Caribbean series and excelled in the U.S. Minor Leagues, took place in the Necropolis of Colon, where directors of the federation and the national commission of this sport also accompanied family and friends.

"We bid farewell today to the great ballplayer, worker, man and friend," said multiple world champion Rodolfo Puente. "His death leaves a void in the history of Cuban, Mexican and Caribbean basin baseball," he asserted.

"We highlight from his life, in addition, the love for the homeland to which he always returned proud and committed," Puente emphasized before recalling the various titles and leaderships conquered by Ayón, author of zero-hit zero-run games and protagonist of recognized contributions to the capital and to the development of Cuban baseball in general.

"We are proud of his 367 triumphs among the professional leagues of Cuba, the United States, Mexico and Nicaragua, and also of his days at the helm of Industriales and his work to help young athletes and coaches of our national sport," he said.
