Havana, November 1 (PL)-- Four Cubans are seeking their passes on Monday to the quarterfinals in the World Boxing Championship, to be held in Belgrade, Serbia.

They are Osvel Caballero (57 kg), Olympic and world champion Andy Cruz (63.5), Kevin Brown (67) and Yoenlis Hernánez (75). If they win, they would be one step away from the medals.

On Sunday, Cuba's team captain and two-time Olympic champion, Julio Cesar La Cruz (92 kg), beat Iran's Toufan Sharifi 5-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals, as well as Herich Ruiz (86), winner against Jordan's Adel Alhindawi.

La Cruz, a double Olympic titleholder, carried the rhythm of the actions to add a new triumph on his way to the fifth universal title of his career, after those achieved in the 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 versions.

Ruiz, meanwhile, dominated his opponent from the middle and long distance, with accurate combinations that decreed in his favor the credit of 29-27 from four of the acting judges, for his second success of the tournament.

After this result, Cuba has 12 wins and two losses in the world championship, with six men in competition, who will strive to improve the performance in the version of Ekaterinburg, Russia 2019, when they totaled a metal of each color.

Since the beginning of the world boxing championships in Havana 1974, Cuba has won 77 gold, 35 silver and 26 bronze medals, and leads the historical medal table, escorted by Russia (41-32-39) and the United States (16-11-19).
