Cuban Granda secures silver and will go for the title at the World Judo Championships

Havana, October 12 (RHC) - Cuba's Andy Granda will compete this Wednesday for the +100 kg title at the World Judo Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

To reach the final, Granda won four bouts, including by wazari in the quarterfinals against Georgian laureate Guran Tushisvili, world champion in 2018, Olympic runner-up in Tokyo-2020, winner of four Grand Slam tournaments and second in the world ranking.

Another of the matancero's victims was Roy Meyer of the Netherlands, bronze medalist at the 2019 and 2021 World Championships.

For the title, the Lima-2019 Pan American champion will go against one of the new promises of Japan, Tatsuru Saito (20 years old), champion of his country and winner of the Baku Grand Slam.

Meanwhile, the stellar Idalys Ortiz (+78 kg) could not reach the medals, winning 2 fights and losing two others.

The Olympic and world multi-medalist won two fights, but then lost to Brazilian Beatriz Souza, who will go for the title, and in the repechage she lost to Raz Herko, from Israel.

The other Cuban who competed on Wednesday, Omar Cruz (+100) lost in his first fight.

Cuba already has a sure medal in the world championship, Granda's silver that can become gold.
