Havana, November 2 (JIT) -- Cuban Carlos Daniel Albornoz rounded up seven points out of a possible nine to be crowned today in the XVI Malaga 2022 International Open Chess Tournament, in Spain.
Second preclassified by his ranking of 2,594 Elo units, he achieved five wins and four draws in an event in which he faced men with more than 2,450 Elo.
The two-time national champion achieved a sequence of four consecutive victories during the first half of the tournament. He then closed with a series of draws, one of them against Armenian Karen Grigoryan, the best ranked with 2,617.
The other occupants of the podium were the local Andres Merario and Grigoryan, both with seven units, but placed second and third after applying the tiebreaker system.
In addition to adding another trophy to his trophy cabinet, Albornoz recovered 2.3 points for his Elo, although they will not be registered until December.
By the way, in the most recent update of the International Chess Federation (Fide) ranking, published this Tuesday and valid during all November, he appears with 2,588 units.
Last September, the player from Agramontino surpassed for the first time the 2,600 points in this ranking. Then he showed 2,605, but the most recent results have not allowed him to stay above that limit.
According to what is published on the Fide website, Albornoz is in second position in the Cuban list, behind Yasser Quesada from Villaclare.
For the latter, his 2,598 units did not change, something that also happened with Luis Ernesto Quesada (2,543), who is in third position.
The most significant thing in the national top-ten is the rise to seventh place of Dylan Berdayes from the capital, recent winner of the XVIII Andrés Clemente Vázquez 2022 Chess Tournament and awaiting the official recognition of the Grand Master title he completed in that tournament.
Dylan appears with an accumulated 2,517 scratches, nine more than those filed in the October update.
MAGNUS CARLSEN ADDS TO THE TOP
Anchored at the top of the world ranking, the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen added three units to his harvest and, with 2,859 points, repeats the position he has held since January 2010. The great expectation lies in whether he will again approach his record of 2 thousand 882, registered in August 2019.
China's Ding Liren, with no classic games reported in October, does not vary the 2 thousand 811 units that assure him the second position in the list. With those he chains his seventh consecutive update with more than 2 thousand 800.
