Havana, December 30 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today lamented the death of legendary Brazilian soccer player Edson Arantes do Nascimiento (Pelé), who passed away at the age of 82, victim of cancer.

"Farewell, Pelé, star of Jogo Bonito; neither the years nor death will be able to erase the mark of your style in Latin American and world soccer," the president wrote on his Twitter account.

The head of state sent his condolences to family, friends and the Brazilian people and noted that "Cuba also mourns Pelé."

On the aforementioned social network, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez expressed his sorrow and affirmed that the world soccer legend will always be remembered.

The three-time world champion died the day before after being diagnosed with colon cancer in September 2021.

Last February he was hospitalized for treatment, and at the end of November he was admitted again for a re-evaluation of the chemotherapy method.

International personalities, the national and world press lamented the departure of Pelé, considered by many to be the greatest soccer player of all time.
