Havana, April 25 (RHC)-- Cuban Dariel Carrion won the gold medal in the men's individual épée, corresponding to fencing at the 5th Alba Sports Games, to be held in Venezuela until April 29.

In the Gymnasium of the Military Academy of the Guard EFOFAC, Carrión defeated Francisco Limardo, from the main local team, 15 to 12 on Monday, to leave one of the top references of this sport in the host nation with the desire to win the title.

Previously, in one of the semifinals, the champion of that weapon also defeated Gabriel Lugo, another member of the Venezuelan A team, by a score of 15-12.

In the elimination pools, the Cuban swordsman had a perfect pace with six victories, which suggested his good competitive state.

Already in the round of 16, he had to do his best to beat Miguel Figueroa, from the second home team, 15-13; while in the quarterfinals, he easily beat Vicente Rojas, from Nicaragua, 15-4, in what was his most comfortable duel.

Lugo and Jesús Limardo, both from the host country, completed the awards podium.

Also competing for the island were Yordan Ferrer and Ringo Quintero, who finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively, while Destel Romero was left behind in 17th place.

Moving on to the women's foil, Yunaisis Montero achieved the best result by winning one of the bronze medals, according to the official website of the competition.

Montero reached the semifinals of that event, but lost 12-15 to Hillary Avelleira, from Venezuela A, who was runner-up after losing 6-15 to her compatriot Isis Giménez, in the dispute for the gold medal.

Liz Rivero, from the second local team, was the other bronze medalist; and also for the Caribbean nation, Elizabeth Hidalgo finished in fifth place, Anai Cordero in tenth and Melissa Perez placed 16th.
