Havana, July 24 (JIT)-- Workers and directors of the Cuban Sports Movement recalled on Monday the historic assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, among the great deeds of our struggles for independence.

The 70th anniversary of that transcendental event that gave continuity to the necessary war towards the definitive revolutionary triumph in 1959 was commemorated at the Coliseum of the Sports City, the great house of sports on the island.

Led by the indispensable man who was, is and will continue to be Fidel, the epic of July 26, 1953 fills with pride those who celebrate it from sports, one of the great strengths of the society that began to be forged from January 1, 1959.

The presence of Agustín Díaz Cartaya, one of the members of that revolutionary generation, author of the July 26 anthem and recipient of the Barbados Martyrs Distinction, was inspiring.

"Thank you for the example and the gesture of accompanying us, Agustín Díaz Cartaya. To you, to Fidel, to Raúl, to Ramiro, to all the heroes and martyrs of those days, and to those who gave and give continuity to the legacy of those who began our redemptive deeds, the commitment not to fail, the conviction to resist creatively and always respond to what the homeland that deserves everything expects from us," said José Cedeño Tamayo, general director of Physical Education and Sport for All of Inder.

He also emphasized: "Inscribed among the most relevant events of our continent in the second half of the 20th century, those facts marked the path towards the definitive triumph of the Revolution that we now defend, dedicated to the improvement of the work that dignified a country that will never again be a backyard of the empire.

"That feat propitiated the emergence of athletes and coaches like those who today give prestige to this historic Coliseum," he added, convinced that since then, triumphs like those experienced just weeks ago in the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023 began to take shape.

Several medalists in that event received awards in an activity that highlighted the dedication, loyalty and love for fair play shown in the Salvadoran and Dominican competitive scenarios. In this way, they contributed to the total of 74 gold, 59 silver and 63 bronze medals with which Cuba placed third in the event.

Demonstrations by the Cuban Wushu School, led by master Roberto Vargas Lee; choreographies by the Venga la Esperanza community project and performances by the choir of the Mariana de Gonitch Academy enhanced the emotional tribute.
