Havana, January 17 (JIT) - Cuban Jorge Luis Barcelan has been elected vice-president of the Pan American Weightlifting Federation (PFLP), in a meeting held in Lima, Peru.

Barcelán has been at the head of the Cuban federation of this sport for about a decade, a period in which outstanding results have been achieved.

Engineer José Carlos Quiñones González has been reelected as president of the entity for the period 2024-2028.

William Peña, who ran for the presidency, withdrew his candidacy in a timely manner and, according to the bylaws, gave way to Quiñones' reelection by acclamation of those attending the assembly.

Quiñones has already led the FPLP from 2019 to 2023. He has boosted the sport in the Americas, positioning it among the most outstanding thanks to world and Olympic medals.

He previously served as president of the Peruvian Olympic Committee and member of the International Weightlifting Federation.

The important meeting was attended by Mohammed Jalood, president of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

There, Peña was confirmed as secretary general, while the position of treasurer was filled by Luis Seijas.

The PFLP also welcomed new vice presidents, reflecting a commitment to inclusion and regional representation.

These include Nadia Alvarado as first vice president and Walker Craig, Luis Zambrano and Barcelán as vice presidents.

Two other Cubans make up the new board of the continental entity: Dr. C. Carlos Cuervo Pérez, head of development and research at the Cuban Weightlifting Federation, will head the training and research committee; and Dr. Yamil Gutiérrez, who will serve on the medical committee.
