Athletics: Silver for Cuban triple jumper in closing of Ibero-American

Havana, May 13 (ACN)-- Cuba closed the last day of the 2024 Ibero-American Athletics Championships, based in Cuiabá, Brazil, with a silver medal, where it also added three bronze medals.

This Sunday, triple jumper Andy Echavarría finished second in his event with a mark of 16.93 meters (m), to accompany the Brazilian Almir Dos Santos (17.31 m) on the podium; while the bronze was achieved by the Colombian Geiner Moreno (16.54 m).

With that result in the triple jump, Echavarría achieved the best performance among the six Cuban athletes who competed in said tournament.

On Saturday, Silinda Morales placed third in the discus throw with a record of 58.16 m, to be behind locals Izabela Rodríguez (63.60 m) and Andressa Oliveira (60.37 m), winners of gold and silver, respectively.

In the same category among men, the discus thrower from the Island Mario Díaz took the bronze with 61.38 m, achieved in the first attempt.

The Spanish Diego Casas (61.91 m) won the silver prize and the host Wellington Fernández (62.31 m) won the scepter, according to the YouTube broadcast of the competition.

Also on Saturday, long jumpers Alejandro Parada and Maikel Vidal were left off the awards podium, placing fourth and fifth, in that order.

Parada, runner-up at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, and owner of the title at the Central Caribbean event in San Salvador, also last year, stretched to 7.79 m; while his partner Vidal nailed the spikes in 7.73 m.

The Uruguayan Emiliano Lasa won the gold medal with a mark of 7.98 m, followed by the Colombian Arnovis de Jesús Dalmero (7.97 m) and the local Lucas Marcelino Dos Santos, who won the silver and bronze metals.

  On Friday, at the opening of this Ibero-American Championship with the silver category in the World Athletics ranking hierarchy scheme, Ronald Mencía, in the hammer throw, opened the harvest of the Caribbean nation with his bronze and mark of 73.20 m in the last chance.
