Alcides Sagarra

Havana, Aug 19 (ACN) Cuban sports authorities highlighted the trajectory of the distinguished trainer Alcides Sagarra Carón, who turned 88 years old on Sunday.

“Congratulations to the founding father of the Cuban School of #boxing. His work and commitment to the homeland are part of the most beautiful pages of our sports movement,” Inder president Osvaldo Vento Montiller wrote on social network X.

“Proud of his contributions and commitment to #Cuba, we congratulate today on his birthday the man who led the consolidation of our #boxing, until it became a reference for the world,” specifies the message of that body, also issued in X.

On Facebook, the Cuban Olympic Committee expressed that it is honored to congratulate him “for what he represents for boxing and Cuban sport in general,” and Domadores de Cuba said that “our sport owes much to the passion and dedication he always showed."

Sagarra directed the national technical team from its first steps until after the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, a period in which the island enjoyed 27 of the 42 titles it has won at that level.

He also led squads to 10 world championships, winning 48 of the 81 sashes that make up the collection signed in those competitions.

According to the JIT publication, Sagarra, Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba, held responsibilities in the local and international federations, and has remained linked to the current generations of coaches and athletes, always ready to offer his experiences.
