Havana, Sep 7 (PL) The reigning champion of the 200 meters in the T12 category, Cuban Omara Durand, today made official her retirement from the track, after a career with 11 Paralympic titles, three of them won in Paris 2024.

"We will not run any more, but we are leaving happy and satisfied," said the 32-year-old sprinter to the Cuban press, after receiving her gold medal at the Stade de France, where she crossed the finish line of the double hectometer in 23.62 seconds.

Accompanied by her guide Yuniol Kindelán, Durand said" she felt very emotional and nostalgic," remembering her brilliant career.

"They are tears of joy and also of nostalgia, because it is what we have done all our lives: running," said the stellar athlete born in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, who also won the 100 and 400 meters crown at the Paralympic Games in the French capital.

Durand, who has also won 14 gold medals at the World Championships and 12 at the Parapan American Games, said that she will embark on new paths, in which she is confident that she will be equally successful.

For his part, Kindelán expressed his satisfaction for the career of the duo, which has won many awards in the king of sports.

"We started as the best and ended up being the best," he said.

Cuba's eleventh Paralympic gold medal took it to 23rd place in the medals table, with six titles, three silver and one bronze, in a summer event that will end tomorrow.
