Havana, Sep 13 (RHC) The two Cuban teams will have their most demanding day so far at the World Chess Olympiad 2024, which is being held in Hungary, when they face Spain. In the Open group, the men secured yesterday a 3-1 victory over South Africa, after victories by Luis Ernesto Quesada, Elier Miranda and Omar Almeida.

Only Havana's Dylan Berdayes abdicated his king for the Cubans in the second round, when Carlos Daniel Albornoz, the main figure of the island team, took a rest.

The women won the match 3.5-0.5 against the Malaysian representation with successes for Yerisbel Miranda, Yaniela Forgas and Ineymig Hernandez, while Oleiny Linares made peace in the defense of the first board.

After these results, both teams will face a more demanding opponent this Friday, although recent data show parity between Cuba and Spain.

The men have one win, one draw and one loss per side in their last encounters against the Europeans, while the women have two wins, one draw and two losses for each team in the five opportunities they have faced each other at the Olympic Games.

In other results of the second round of the Open segment, Venezuela ended with a 2-2 draw against Greece, Canada had similar results against Norway, while the United States swept Singapore 4-0.

The women's competition had a bad day for the Latin American teams of Colombia and Brazil, who were defeated 4-0 by China and Poland, respectively (Taken from Prensa Latina).
