Guatemala City, June 14 (RHC-teleSUR)-- A major earthquake has hit near the Mexico-Guatemala border. A strong 6.9-magnitude tremor struck eight kilometers southwest of Tajumulco, Guatemala – a small town near the Mexico-Guatemala border.
The earthquake hit after a series of smaller quakes hit the Pacific coast off Chiapas. The epicenter of the earthquake was 98 kilometers beneath the surface. At least one person was reported hurt, but there have been no reported fatalities.
Guatemala is susceptible to earthquakes because it intersects two tectonic plates. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), there could be “aftershocks hours, days, or weeks after the main quake.”
Aftershocks were reportedly felt in western Guatemala and southern Mexico. There have been no reports of casualties or tsunami warning issued.
