Cristina Fernandez speaks after her victory

Buenos Aires, October 23 (RHC) Former Argentinian president Cristina Fernandez was elected to the Senate representing the Unidad Ciudadana (Citizen Unity) Party after obtaining over 3 million votes during the mid-term legislative election held on Sunday.

In remarks to the press after her victory, Fernandez said her party “is here to stay”, and that it will be the base for the creation of an alternative to president Mauricio Macri’s government.

The former president was the opposition’s leading contender in a race where Macri’s coalition won in Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe and Mendoza provinces.

Fernandez thanked her fellow citizens for “building democracy” and she recalled that during the elections her party received more votes than during the primaries.

"Our party has been able to grow despite the fact that we have faced the most enormous and unprecedented concentration of power since the restoration of democracy and we must be proud of this achievement, “Fernandez said.

She added that her party emerges as the strongest opposition to the government and that they will carry that responsibility with “determination and energy”.

During the elections on Sunday, twenty-four of 72 Senate seats were at stake as were 127 seats in the 257-member lower Chamber of Deputies.
