Caracas, March 26 (RHC) -- The Venezuelan Supreme Court on Tuesday sentenced opposition politician Daniel Ceballos to one year in prison on charges of treason and civil rebellion.

Ceballos, the mayor of San Cristobal, located some 840 km southwest of Caracas, was also dismissed from his post, according to a press release by the Supreme Court.

The press release said the decision was taken unanimously by all magistrates after a hearing.

Interior and Justice Minister Miguel Rodriguez had said Ceballos failed to fulfill his duties as the top authority of his municipality and supported the irrational violence that erupted in the city.

Violent protests against President Nicolas Maduro started on February 4 in San Cristobal, the capital city of Tachira, with Ceballos himself calling for the toppling of Maduro's government.
