Mexico City, November 14 (RHC)-- In exile in Mexico, Evo Morales has received the Key to Mexico City.  Morales resigned on Sunday in the face of rising right-wing violence and pressure over accusations of vote rigging in last month's election.

Speaking at the event on Wednesday, Evo Morales said that his only crime was being Bolivia's first indigenous president.

In 48 hours of turmoil in Bolivia over the weekend, mutinous police climbed on station buildings and joined marches, allies deserted Morales, the Washington-based Organisation of American States (OAS) declared his re-election was manipulated, and the military urged him to quit.

Morales wrote on his Twitter account on Wednesday that the coup against him was "a political and economic conspiracy coming from the United States."

Meanwhile, clashes between indigenous supporters of Morales and security forces continued in La Paz. Police fired teargas trying to disperse the crowds, who reciprocated by throwing rocks, bricks and other projectiles.  Dressed in colorful traditional attire, protesters flooded the streets of La Paz.
