Trump asking aides and lawyers about self-pardon power

Washington, January 8 (RHC)-- U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly been asking aides and lawyers, including White House counsel Pat Cipollone, about his self-pardon power.  A number of White House insiders have confirmed that the conversations have happened in recent weeks.

According to reports, Trump has asked about the legal and political consequences of a self-pardon.  The New York Times reported earlier Thursday that Trump has suggested in conversations since Election Day that he wants to pardon himself, citing two people familiar with the discussions.

He has also asked for legal opinions on whether he has the authority to issue a self-pardon and has been advised on the potential political fallout.  This person said it was not yet clear whether the President would follow through with a pardon for himself.

Another person said it is not in the works in the White House counsel's office currently but that doesn't mean it won't happen or that the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel is not currently reviewing the matter.
