Santo Domingo, July 8 (RHC)-- A large number of Dominicans residing in Haiti began to return to their country of origin through the border post of Dajabón on Wednesday, fearing the political instability caused by the assassination of Jovenel Moïse.

The international community fears an escalation of violence, so Dominican authorities have arranged special measures to ensure national security and that of Dominicans living in the neighboring nation.

The mayor of Dajabón, Santiago Riverón, informed that he is in communication with the municipal authorities of Juana Méndez, in Haiti, who have informed them that violent mobilizations are expected for this Thursday.  However, the neighboring nation remains relatively calm after the murder of Moïse at the hands of an armed commando.

President Luis Abinader summoned the National Security and Defense Council, which met since the news of the assassination was made public and decided to activate the Gavion Plan, which ordered the reinforcement of patrolling at critical points of the border with troops from specialized tactical units.

The border was closed by the Government of the Dominican Republic and the border markets were suspended until further notice, and only residents of Haiti are being allowed to return to the national territory.  If they return by air, they will only be able to land at the Joaquin Balaguer airport in El Higüero.

Also, the Ministry of Public Health issued an epidemiological alert throughout the Dominican Republic so that health personnel remain on alert, due to the fact that the social and political situations in Haiti have historically had an impact on health in the Dominican Republic.
