Montevideo, June 20 (PL-RHC) -- The first Uruguayan satellite, Antelsat, was launched into space Friday, on occasion of the 250th birthday of leader Jose Gervasio Artigas.

The device, developed by the state-owned telecommunication company Antel and the Engineering Faculty at the University of the Republic was launched into space from the Yasny base in Russia at 16:11 local time.

Considered an historic event for Uruguay, the launch coincided with the start of the match between Uruguay and England at the soccer World Cup in Brazil, which ended with Uruguay winning 2-1.
