Brazil's Supreme Federal Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes,

Brasilia, August 22 (RHC)-- Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) repudiated the filing of an impeachment request by President Jair Bolsonaro against one of its members, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, the first such lawsuit in the history of the South American country.

The Court repudiated Bolsonaro's act "of filing a complaint against one of its members for decisions of an inquiry approved by the full Court."  The Court's statement noted: "The democratic rule of law does not tolerate that a magistrate be accused for his decisions, since they must be questioned in the corresponding appeals, obeying due legal process." 

"The Supreme Court emphasizes that "while expressing full confidence in the independence and impartiality of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, it will await, in a republican manner, the deliberation of the Federal Senate."

In this regard, former magistrate and former president of the STF Celso de Mello called the initiative of the ex-military officer a slander.   President Bolsonaro once again attacked the STF when he presented to the Senate last night a request for impeachment against Alexandre de Moraes, a minister of the Court.

Although he was not in Brasília, Bolsonaro authorized an advisor from the Planalto Palace to go to the Senate General Secretariat to deliver the document.  This is the first time in the history of the Republic that a president has requested the removal of an STF minister.

The formalization of Bolsonaro's request for the impeachment of Moraes comes on the same day that the Federal Police carried out search and seizure warrants at the homes of the president's allies.
