The daughter of dictator Alberto Fugimori goes on trial

Lima, August 31 (RHC)-- The Peruvian Judicial Power has ordered that the stage of control of the accusation presented against the former presidential candidate of Fuerza Popular, Keiko Fujimori, and 41 other people in a case of money laundering will begin.

These are accusations against the daughter of dictator Alberto Fujimori regarding irregular contributions in the framework of the presidential campaigns of 2011 and 2016, to which she also ran as a candidate.

This legal stage has been reached after the conclusion of the intermediate step in which the criminal complaint filed against Fujimori was examined, in a case initiated by the special team of the Lava Jato case since March.

If found guilty, Keiko Fujimori faces a sentence of 30 years and 10 months in prison, according to the prosecutor's request, although she has already served more than 15 months in pre-trial detention for this case.

Several weeks ago, the Public Prosecutor's Office had desisted from requesting a new pre-trial detention against Fujimori, because there were no grounds for it, due to a procedural error on the part of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Currently, Fujimori, 46 years old, with her opposition party, has 24 legislators in the 130-member unicameral Peruvian Congress.

The Public Prosecutor's Office recently opened another investigation against Fujimori, referring to the coordinations of the imprisoned Vladimiro Montesinos, who was an advisor to Alberto Fujimori, also imprisoned for crimes against humanity.
