Avenue in Santiago de Chile will be renamed Víctor Jara in honor of the singer-songwriter who was assassinated by forces of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

Santiago de Chile, September 8 (RHC)-- The Municipal Council of Estación Central reports that a section of Ecuador Avenue, located in Santiago de Chile, will be renamed Víctor Jara in honor of the singer-songwriter who was assassinated by forces of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

A few days before the anniversary of his assassination, the council decided to pay a well-deserved tribute to the man who was imprisoned in September 1973 at the former State Technical University (now University of Santiago de Chile), which is located precisely in the part that will bear his name.

Víctor Jara Martínez worked as a teacher at the university, where he was also a professor of acting and contributed to the consolidation of several significant groups in Chile's cultural history, such as Quilapayún and Inti Illimani.

This historical fact was recognized by various Chilean organizations and social movements.  "In a historic recognition, the Mayor and the Municipal Council of Estación Central approved the change of the name of Av. Ecuador to Av. Víctor Jara," said the University of Chile.
