Last month was a record loss of forests in Brazil

Brasilia, November 13 (RHC)-- The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), linked to the Ministry of Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro, reported that since there are records of deforestation alerts in the Amazon, last month was a record in this area.

The Amazon lost an area of 877 square kilometers of its rainforest according to data recorded in the month of October, which represents an increase of 5% over the same month last year, where 836 km² were destroyed, reported the Institute.

This is the largest confirmed deforested area since records have been kept since 2016.

The alerts were issued by the Real Time Deforestation Detection System (Detrer), which through images captured via satellite detects daily signs of alteration of vegetation cover in areas larger than three hectares. either by total deforestation or degradation by logging, burning, among others.

The event occurs at the same time as the climate summit (COP26) is being held in Glasgow (Scotland), where Brazil promised to put an end to illegal deforestation by 2028, but in practice this is not the case, according to the executive secretary of the non-governmental organization Observatorio do Clima, Márcio Astrini.
