Havana, December 6 (RHC)-- The Argentinean Foreign Ministry reported Monday that for the first time in history Argentina will chair the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN), starting in 2022.

The election was made by acclamation in the context of the organizational session held in Geneva, Switzerland, for the sixteenth cycle of the Council of the multilateral organization comprising 47 nations.

"It is a recognition of our country and its commitment to human rights as part of the national identity since the recovery of democracy," said Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero.

By 2022, according to the rotating policy of the United Nations, it was the turn of a Latin American nation to assume the position, and the members of that zone agreed to propose and subsequently elect Argentina.

On behalf of the southern country, the position of president pro tempore will be held by the Permanent Representative of Argentina to the International Organizations in Geneva, Federico Villegas Delgado.

In 2022, the UN Human Rights Council will have among its missions to conduct the universal periodic review of human rights and make decisions to continue advancing on pending issues on the Council's agenda.
