Bridgetown, January 20 (RHC)-- The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won the general elections held on Wednesday in the Caribbean island, with Prime Minister Mia Mottley winning re-election to the post for another term.

According to the preliminary official results, the BLP has so far won 18 constituencies of the 30 that were in dispute in the historic election day, the first to be held since the country broke ties with the British Crown.

The specialized media Kevz Politics projected that the BLP will have a large majority in Parliament, where it will hold more than two thirds of the legislative seats.  Thus, Mottley, leader of the BLP, will secure a second consecutive term as Prime Minister.

Barbados, with some 280,000 inhabitants, became last November the youngest Republic in the world when it completely abandoned its colonial past after renouncing the Queen of England as head of state.

Last December, the country called for early general elections for January 19, for which the parliament was dissolved.
